Arizona Life Coalition Strongly Opposes PROPOSITION 139
Phoenix, AZ — Arizona Life Coalition (ALC) urges all citizens to carefully consider the consequences of Proposition 139. While the proposition claims to legalize abortion only up to the point of fetal viability, it includes a broad “mental health” exception that allows abortions beyond this point for nearly any reason. This opens the door to unrestricted late-term abortions, far beyond what the proposition suggests.
Recent surveys show that most Arizonans believe abortion should be limited to 15 weeks or earlier. Under Arizona’s current law, abortion is legal for up to 15 weeks, with exceptions for medical emergencies to protect the life of the mother, a law confirmed by the State Attorney General. However, if Proposition 139 passes, it would amend the state constitution, overturning these laws and allowing abortion up to birth for nearly any reason, even in non-emergency situations.
Key Concerns with Proposition 139:
1. Late-Term Abortions Could Become Commonplace: Similar laws in other states resulted in over 10,000 late-term abortions last year. Proposition 139 would similarly allow abortions up to birth, far beyond fetal viability, endangering vulnerable lives.
2. Sexual Predators Could Escape Justice: The proposition states that "no law can penalize any individual who aids or assists" someone in obtaining an abortion. This could allow abusers who coerce victims into having abortions to escape prosecution, putting victims at even greater risk of exploitation and harm.
3. Parental Consent Requirement Removed: Proposition 139 would eliminate parental notification laws, leaving minors to undergo abortions or take abortion pills alone without their parents’ guidance. This strips families of their right to protect and support their children during such critical moments, while exposing young women to serious health risks without adequate medical supervision.
4. Healthcare Providers’ Rights at Risk: By creating a “fundamental right” to abortion, Proposition 139 could force healthcare providers and government healthcare plans to participate in or fund abortions against their conscience, infringing on their personal and professional rights.
5. Mental and Physical Health Impact on Women: Evidence shows that 87% of women who view an ultrasound before deciding on an abortion choose to continue their pregnancies. Without this requirement, many women may proceed with abortions, only to later suffer from regret, depression, or emotional trauma. Moreover, healthcare data indicate that 1 in 25 women who take abortion pills experience complications that require emergency medical attention.
Arizona Life Coalition (ALC) opposes Proposition 139 because it undermines the sanctity of innocent human life, from conception up to birth. ALC believes that civil government has a duty to protect citizens from harm and the right to life of pre-born human beings and to give them equal protection under the law. Laws that allow for the taking of innocent life, even in the name of “choice,” cannot be supported.
Proposition 139 dismantles the important safeguards that protect women, children, and healthcare providers in Arizona. It disregards the value of pre-born life, allows abusers to go unpunished, and removes protections for young women and families. It’s critical that voters consider these dangers and VOTE NO on Proposition 139 to preserve the existing laws that protect both mothers and their unborn children.
